In a press statement issued over the week by the senator representing Southern Kaduna Senatorial District, Sen. Sunday Marshal Katung, entitled: “Sustainable Peace is Still Possible.” He expressed optimism that in the face of torrid disagreement and violent conflict between individuals or groups, peace can still exist.
The federal lawmaker made the assertion following the disagreement in Kwassam and Bital ward of Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna which ensued between a Kwassam man and a Fulani man that led to the Kwassam man getting injured and resulted in a retaliation and a counter retaliation that led to four people being killed, with some still in the hospital.
This particular cycle of violence stands totally condemned, Katung said. It pains me that situations that are resolvable through a constitutional arbiter and other legal institutions could be allowed to needlessly degenerate into more loss of lives and destruction of property.
While these killings are detestable to any decent human given how sacrosanct life is, it however, should not influence any to take the laws into his/her hands. No matter the level of provocation, the police as a legal entity should be the first avenue for complaints and redress. Other institutions are readily available.
While conscious of the efforts our revered traditional, religious, and socio-cultural leaders at all levels are putting into creating a peaceful environment, I want to appeal to them to do more.
I sincerely commiserate with the family of those who lost their loved ones. I also pray for a speedy recovery for the injured in the hospital, and I am urging all people to work assiduously toward a peaceful coexistence.
I, on my part, will continue to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders both within and outside my senatorial district to ensure that sustainable peace among all our people becomes.
