The wife of Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, Abigail Marshall Katung of Labour and Co-operative Party, a Nigerian migrant and Leeds University alumni has been appointed as the Lord Mayor of Leeds in the United Kingdom for the 2024-2025 term.
The Lord Mayor of Leeds is a ceremonial post held by a member of Leeds City Council, elected annually by the council.
The astute politician who is excited by her being elected to the exalted position, expressed her mind via her twitter (X account): “I am deeply honoured and humbled to be chosen to serve as the next Lord Mayor of Leeds for the 2024/25 term.
“Our city is a shining example of compassion, resilience, and unity, and it’s with great pride that my family and I look forward to undertaking the responsibility to serve you.”
The Leeds City College congratulated her on her new post. The college said, “We look forward to continuing our work together to provide skills and opportunities for people in the region.”
In a press statement issued by the Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa hailed the appointment of Katung.
She described the appointment as “well-deserved. ” Adding that, “I was not surprised about the appointment of Councillor Katung going by her past achievements and records which has had positive impacts on humanity.”
She prayed for a successful and impactful tenure for her and urged Nigerians in Leeds to continue to rally round and give her necessary support geared towards national development.
Councillor Katung is the first elected African Councillor in Leeds in the history of the Council and is the Chair of Scrutiny Board for Infrastructure, Investment and Inclusive Growth.
