The Joint Congress of Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya — comprising the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education in Nigeria (SSUCOEN), and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) — has announced a three-day warning strike, commencing Thursday, June 19, and ending Monday, June 23, 2025.

The decision follows the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Kaduna State Government on June 2, 2025. In a notice jointly signed by Comrade Dr. Marajos Alkali (Chairman, COEASU) and Comrade Stephen Victor Dutse (Secretary, COEASU), the unions stated that the strike was necessitated by the government’s failure to respond to two key demands:

  1. Implementation of CONPCASS/CONTEDISS Salary Structure:
The unions demand the immediate adoption of the 15-year-old Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structures (CONPCASS/CONTEDISS), in accordance with the schemes and conditions of service approved by the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).
  2. Review of Retirement Age Policy:
They are also calling for the inclusion of non-academic staff in the 65-year retirement age policy for academic staff, as approved by NCCE, without imposing any additional requirements.

The joint statement reaffirmed the unions’ commitment to peaceful dialogue and urged all members to strictly comply with the strike directive while remaining open to constructive engagement with the government.

“We still reaffirm our commitment to ensuring synergy with the State Government as well as remain open to constructive dialogue with the hope for swift resolution,” the statement reads.

This action marks a significant escalation in the dispute, as academic and non-academic activities at the institution are expected to be paralyzed for the duration of the strike.
