In a bid to promote peaceful coexistence and sustainable agriculture in Southern Kaduna, a two-day training session was held on June 19 and 21, 2025. The program, facilitated by the Community Action for Peace and Socio-Economic Development (CAPSED) in collaboration with the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD), brought together religious and traditional leaders from selected communities in Zangon Kataf and Jema’a Local Government Areas.

The training focused on two key themes: peacebuilding and the promotion of sustainable farming practices, with a strong emphasis on the production of organic manure. A major highlight of the sessions was the focus on ginger farming, a significant economic activity in Southern Kaduna.

Addressing the participants, the lead trainer, Dr. Barak Zebedee emphasized the need to adopt improved and organic methods of ginger cultivation, especially in the aftermath of the devastating ginger blight outbreak of 2023 which adversely affected many farmers in the region. “Ginger is currently the most valuable crop in Southern Kaduna. We must protect and preserve it by embracing new, disease-resistant methods of farming,” the trainer stated.

Participants hailed from two communities each in Zangon Kataf and Jema’a LGAs, and were drawn from religious and traditional institutions—an intentional strategy to ensure grassroots impact and community-wide adoption of both peace and agricultural initiatives.

The training also had the support of the Justice, Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) of the Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan.

CAPSED and CAFOD reaffirmed their commitment to working with local communities to foster peace and economic resilience through such collaborative efforts.
