In the wake of the official launch of a new political coalition, supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have continued to react strongly, focusing their criticisms on the involvement of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai. However, voices within the movement insist that the coalition is not about El-Rufai, but a broader national effort to save Nigeria from what they describe as the APC’s “inept governance.”
Speaking on the issue, political commentator and PDP stalwart Edward John Auta clarified that El-Rufai is only one of many leaders in the coalition and that Nigerians are well aware of the collective nature of the initiative.
“This movement is not driven by saints or angels, but by ordinary men and women—leaders and followers—who are united by the common pain and hardship currently experienced across the country,” Auta said.
Responding to criticisms highlighting El-Rufai’s controversial tenure as governor, Auta stressed that pointing fingers at past administrations cannot justify the failures of the current APC government. “The repeated mention of El-Rufai’s past cannot excuse the present suffering or halt the looming collapse of the APC at both state and national levels,” he added.
He further hinted at a likely convergence between the coalition and the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections, suggesting a united front may be in the works.
“The coalition and the leaders of our great party, the PDP, shall surely have a meeting point before the 2027 election date. Simple,” Auta concluded.
The coalition’s emergence signals the growing appetite for political realignment as Nigeria edges closer to a pivotal election year.
