Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, has urged residents of the district to remain vigilant and ensure that children are adequately vaccinated following reports of diphtheria outbreaks in neighbouring Plateau State and other parts of the country.
Katung, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Midat Joseph, described diphtheria as a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening bacterial infection requiring urgent collective action to prevent its spread.
The senator stressed that the disease is both treatable and preventable, particularly when detected early and appropriate medical intervention is provided.
He called on parents, guardians, schools, community leaders and other stakeholders across Kaduna South to take proactive measures to protect children and communities from the disease.
Katung advised residents to maintain good personal hygiene by regularly washing their hands with soap, covering their mouths when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding overcrowded places where possible.
He also urged residents to watch out for symptoms associated with diphtheria, including sore throat, fever, runny nose, red eyes, neck swelling and the presence of a thick grey coating or white patch in the throat or nose.
According to him, anyone exhibiting suspected symptoms should seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility rather than resorting to self-medication.
He further urged residents to promptly report suspected cases to the nearest Primary Healthcare Centre or Disease Surveillance Officer to facilitate early detection and containment.
The senator disclosed that he had reached out to relevant health authorities and would continue to collaborate with the Kaduna State Government and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) to strengthen disease surveillance and ensure the availability of vaccines and other medical supplies within the senatorial district.
Katung appealed to residents not to panic, but to remain proactive and take necessary preventive measures.
He expressed confidence that with vigilance, vaccination, early detection and cooperation among health authorities and communities, the spread of diphtheria could be effectively curtailed.
