Township Stadium was awash with colour, culture and celebration as the 3rd edition of the Southern Kaduna Festival (SKFEST) 2026 brought together ethnic nationalities, traditional institutions, government officials and distinguished guests from across the country under the theme, “Embrace Diversity, Building Bridges.”
The festival showcased the rich cultural heritage of Southern Kaduna through vibrant displays of traditional music, dance and cultural exhibitions by various ethnic groups in the region.
A major highlight of the event was the recognition of outstanding individuals whose contributions have positively impacted Southern Kaduna, Kaduna State and Nigeria.
The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), was conferred with the prestigious title of Southern Kaduna Grand Commander (SKGC), while the late Hon. Timothy Barau Gandu received the highest honour, the Southern Kaduna Merit Award, posthumously.
Also honoured with the Southern Kaduna Merit Award were HRH Bature Sunday Likoro, the Agwom Kamuru, and Mrs. Abigail Marshall Katung, wife of Senator Sunday Marshall Katung.
In his acceptance speech, General Musa described the award as a deeply humbling recognition from his people and dedicated it to the hardworking sons and daughters of Southern Kaduna who continue to distinguish themselves in various fields.
He commended the organisers of SKFEST for sustaining a platform that promotes cultural preservation, unity and social integration.
According to him, the festival’s theme, “Embrace Diversity, Building Bridges,” reflects the values needed to foster peace, understanding and development in an increasingly diverse society.
“Beyond the colourful displays of culture, music, dance and tradition, this festival represents something deeper. It is a celebration of identity, heritage, unity and shared aspirations,” he said.
The Defence Minister stressed the importance of unity and peaceful coexistence, noting that sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace, inclusion and mutual respect.
Addressing the youth, he urged them to invest in education, acquire relevant skills, embrace innovation and entrepreneurship, and avoid activities capable of undermining their future.
General Musa also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling security challenges across the country, describing security as the foundation upon which economic growth, investment and national development are built.
He pledged continued dedication to serving the nation and upholding the values of integrity, patriotism and excellence.
The festival drew traditional rulers, religious leaders, community stakeholders, women and youth groups, as well as prominent personalities from different sectors, reinforcing SKFEST’s growing reputation as a platform for promoting cultural pride, social harmony and regional development.
Participants described the event as a powerful reflection of Southern Kaduna’s rich cultural diversity and a practical demonstration of the festival’s theme of embracing diversity while building bridges of unity and progress.
