The Southern Kaduna Lawyers’ Forum (SKLF) has called for an immediate, thorough and transparent investigation into the death of Miss Mary Habila, whose body was reportedly discovered at the residence of the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Solomon Musa, and Publicity Secretary, Solomon G. Yohanna, Esq., the forum described the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death as “tragic, mysterious and disturbing,” expressing condolences to her family and loved ones.
The lawyers’ body said conflicting reports surrounding the incident have raised serious concerns that require a comprehensive investigation in line with the Constitution and established legal and medical procedures.
SKLF called on relevant law enforcement and security agencies to conduct an impartial investigation, including a valid autopsy and, where necessary, a coroner’s inquest, to establish the actual cause of death.
The forum also urged that Habila’s burial should not be hurried until the necessary investigations are concluded, arguing that doing otherwise could fuel public suspicion and undermine confidence in the investigative process.
According to the statement, investigators should determine the circumstances that led to Habila’s presence at the minister’s residence, establish when she died and when her death was reported, identify those present at the residence on the day of the incident, determine the minister’s whereabouts at the time, clarify reports suggesting a delay between her death and public disclosure, and verify details of her employment and professional role.
The forum stressed that no individual, irrespective of status or position, should be above the law and urged everyone with relevant information to cooperate with investigators. It also called for the findings of the investigation to be made public upon completion.
While appealing to members of the public and the media to avoid speculation and respect the privacy of the bereaved family, SKLF said it was prepared to provide legal support and monitor the investigation to ensure justice is done.
The lawyers further stated that they were considering legal action if necessary to ensure accountability, insisting that the constitutional right to life must be protected and that the rule of law should prevail without fear or favour.
The statement concluded by expressing confidence that the authorities would act diligently to establish the facts surrounding the death and deliver justice for the deceased and her family.
