Türkiye has pledged to support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism, with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan assuring closer cooperation in military training and intelligence sharing.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Ankara on Tuesday after talks with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Erdoğan said Türkiye was ready to share its extensive counterterrorism experience with Nigeria.
“We are ready to share Türkiye’s significant experience in counterterrorism,” Erdoğan stated, noting that terrorist groups operating in Africa’s Sahel region pose a serious threat to the stability of the continent.
The Turkish leader said discussions also covered trade, energy, investment, education and the defence industry, reaffirming both countries’ commitment to achieving a bilateral trade volume of $5 billion.
Nigeria, Türkiye Strengthen Military Ties
Nigeria and Türkiye also signed a bilateral military cooperation agreement aimed at deepening defence and security relations between the two nations.
The agreement was concluded during President Tinubu’s official visit to Türkiye, which he undertook alongside the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa.
General Musa held separate discussions with Türkiye’s Vice President, Cevdet Yılmaz, focusing on military technology, defence collaboration and capacity building.
As part of the engagement, the Minister of Defence inspected some of the military equipment covered by the agreement reached between President Tinubu and President Erdoğan.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening military cooperation, enhancing defence capabilities and building a strategic partnership to address shared security challenges.
