Representatives of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Southern Kaduna have urged Christians and Muslims not to allow recent remarks by the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, to create division among the people.
The religious leaders spoke at a joint JNI-CAN peace meeting in Kafanchan on Sunday, describing Musa as an accomplished military officer committed to peace, unity and national cohesion.
Chairman of the Council of Imams, Southern Kaduna, Imam Muhammed Kabir Kasim, said Musa should not be viewed as a politician because of comments and interpretations circulating on social media.
“General Christopher Gwabin Musa is an upright man and a top military brass who should not be mistaken for being a politician,” he said.
Similarly, Chairman of JNI, Southern Kaduna/Jema’a, Mallam Garba Alhassan Adamu, said his interactions with Musa had shown him to be deeply concerned about peace and stability in the region.
“His desire is to see peace restored in Southern Kaduna, a region he is coming from,” Adamu said.
On his part, Chairman of CAN, Kachia Local Government Area, Rev. Ezekiel Jock, said no individual could make a statement that would resonate positively with everyone.
He noted that Musa, like every other human being, could make comments that some people might disagree with, but urged the public not to allow such differences to undermine peaceful coexistence.
Jock stressed that Southern Kaduna has two major faiths and called for restraint, understanding and respect in responding to sensitive public statements.
The religious leaders urged Christians and Muslims to focus on peace and unity, stressing that differences over public statements should not be allowed to create religious or regional division.
