Kaduna State’s free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mass transit scheme is emerging as a model for other states seeking to reduce transportation costs and cushion the economic hardship faced by citizens.

The initiative, introduced by Governor Uba Sani, is designed to ease the burden of daily commuting on residents, including civil servants, students, security personnel and low-income earners.

Through the provision of free CNG-powered buses, the Kaduna State Government aims to make transportation more affordable, reduce household expenses and improve access to workplaces, schools and other essential destinations.

The programme also promotes the use of cleaner energy alternatives, reflecting growing efforts to explore domestic gas resources as a sustainable solution to Nigeria’s transportation challenges.

In Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo is advancing plans to introduce free or subsidised CNG-powered buses through the Edo City Transport Service (ECTS).

The initiative is expected to provide relief for workers, students and other commuters grappling with rising transportation costs.
The development highlights the growing interest among state governments in adopting affordable mass transit systems to mitigate the economic impact of rising fuel prices.

Kaduna’s experience underscores the potential of government-backed transportation initiatives to deliver direct benefits to citizens while promoting cleaner energy and more efficient public transport systems.

As other states explore similar interventions, the adoption of CNG-powered mass transit could become an important component of efforts to improve mobility, reduce commuting expenses and enhance the welfare of residents.
