The Honourable Minister of Defence has stressed that security remains the foundation for sustaining democracy, economic growth, and national development in Nigeria.
Speaking at The Platform Africa June 12 Special Edition themed “Governance, Democracy and National Security,” the minister said democracy cannot thrive where citizens live in fear or where violence disrupts communities. He noted that security goes beyond military operations and must focus on creating an environment where citizens can live, work, and pursue opportunities without fear.
The minister identified terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, arms trafficking, oil theft, cybercrime, misinformation, and disinformation as some of the major threats confronting Nigeria. He emphasized that modern security challenges are increasingly interconnected and require intelligence, technology, institutional coordination, and regional cooperation to address effectively.
While acknowledging significant gains recorded by the Armed Forces and security agencies, including the neutralization of terrorist leaders and disruption of criminal networks, he noted that many Nigerians still face security concerns in their daily lives.
Looking ahead, the minister highlighted the growing role of technology in national security, citing artificial intelligence, drones, cyber capabilities, and data analytics as critical tools for future defence operations. He called for increased investment in indigenous innovation, research, and technological development.
He further stressed that national security is a shared responsibility involving government, security agencies, traditional and religious institutions, the media, the private sector, and citizens. He urged Nigerians to reject extremism, misinformation, and divisive narratives that undermine national unity.
The minister concluded by calling on citizens to embrace patriotism, responsible citizenship, and national unity, expressing confidence that Nigeria would overcome its security challenges and continue on the path of democratic and economic progress.
