The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed as baseless media reports suggesting that Vice President Kashim Shettima may be replaced as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Felix Morka, the APC said it had observed a growing wave of speculation in sections of the media concerning a possible change in the vice-presidential ticket.
According to the party, the rumours recently escalated with the mention of specific individuals allegedly being considered as replacements for the Vice President.
“The stories are purely speculative, untrue and utterly baseless,” the APC said.
The party urged media organisations to desist from giving prominence to what it described as rumour-mongering and unverified sources, warning that such reports were capable of promoting confusion and discord in the polity.
It further noted that under Nigeria’s electoral laws, political activities in relation to the 2027 elections remain prohibited, stressing that the party is currently focused on governance rather than electoral permutations.
“At this time, our Party remains focused on supporting President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima in delivering the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and entrenching its bold reforms that are now steadily transforming the economy, building prosperity, and improving the living conditions of Nigerians,” the statement read.
The APC also cautioned its ministers, senior government officials and party leaders against making comments that could fuel unnecessary political speculation.
It urged them to concentrate on their official responsibilities and on consolidating the achievements of the Tinubu-led administration.
