The Minister of Defence has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the Nigerian Navy through enhanced resources, modern technology, and strategic support to ensure the protection of Nigeria’s maritime interests and regional waters.
The Minister made the pledge while serving as the Special Guest of Honour at the Nigerian Navy’s 70th Anniversary Ceremonial Sunset Dinner and Awards Night in Lagos, the grand finale of weeklong activities marking seven decades of the Navy’s service to the nation.
Speaking at the event, the Minister stressed the importance of innovation and emerging technologies in addressing evolving maritime security challenges. He noted that the future effectiveness of the Navy depends on its ability to deploy advanced surveillance systems, intelligence capabilities, unmanned technologies, cyber defence tools, and data-driven operational platforms.
According to him, a technologically driven Navy would not only improve maritime domain awareness and operational efficiency but also strengthen collective security efforts across the Gulf of Guinea and beyond through enhanced collaboration with regional and international partners.
The Minister assured that the Federal Government remains committed to boosting the Navy’s operational capabilities to enable it to effectively safeguard Nigeria’s maritime assets, protect national interests, and support economic development.
He commended the Chief of the Naval Staff and personnel of the Nigerian Navy for their achievements over the past 70 years, describing the Service as a symbol of professionalism, discipline, resilience, and organisational excellence.
The Minister also acknowledged the contributions of Nigeria’s international partners, thanking them for their continued cooperation and support in promoting maritime security and stability.
Highlighting the Navy’s role in national development, he said its operations have significantly contributed to the growth of Nigeria’s blue economy by securing strategic sea routes, offshore oil and gas facilities, and other critical maritime infrastructure.
He noted that the Navy has remained at the forefront of efforts to combat piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing, and other maritime crimes that threaten economic growth and national prosperity.
Beyond maritime operations, the Minister said the Nigerian Navy has played a crucial role in internal security efforts through joint operations with other military services and security agencies, helping to maintain peace and stability across the country.
According to him, these contributions have strengthened Nigeria’s sovereignty, boosted investor confidence, facilitated trade and commerce, and positioned the country to fully benefit from opportunities within its maritime sector.
The Minister also congratulated officers and ratings who received awards during the ceremony, including personnel honoured posthumously for their outstanding service and sacrifice.
He praised the award recipients for their dedication, professionalism, courage, and selfless service, noting that they have upheld the highest traditions of the Nigerian Navy and inspired future generations of naval personnel.
The event featured the traditional Ceremonial Sunset, a longstanding naval custom symbolising duty, honour, discipline, and the transition from one watch to another. Organisers said the ceremony also provided an opportunity to reflect on the Navy’s seven decades of service and celebrate the commitment of its personnel to the security and prosperity of Nigeria.
The Ministry of Defence joined Nigerians in celebrating the landmark anniversary and commended officers, ratings, and civilian personnel of the Nigerian Navy for their unwavering dedication to national security and development.
