Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, has recorded significant achievements in legislation, constituency development, education, healthcare and empowerment programmes three years after his inauguration into the 10th Senate on June 13, 2023.
The lawmaker, who came into office on a four-point agenda anchored on legislation, oversight, constituency development and human capital investment, has undertaken projects and interventions across the eight local government areas of Southern Kaduna.
One of his major legislative achievements is the establishment of the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, the first federal university in Southern Kaduna and the country’s only specialised university of applied sciences. The bill, sponsored by Katung in 2024, was subsequently signed into law and the institution is now operational.
The senator also sponsored bills seeking the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Kafanchan, Sickle Cell Disorder Research and Therapy Centres, and a Teaching Hospital for the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia.
Beyond legislation, Katung drew national attention to key challenges facing the district through motions on the floor of the Senate. His motion on the diphtheria outbreak in Kafanchan prompted intervention by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), while another on the fungal disease that affected ginger farms contributed to a Federal Government intervention package of ₦1.6 billion for affected farmers.
He also sponsored a motion advocating the revival of Nigeria’s textile industry as part of efforts to stimulate employment and economic growth.
In the area of constituency development, the senator facilitated the construction and equipping of ICT centres at Government Secondary School, Kafanchan, and Government Secondary School, Damakasuwa, while several other public secondary schools received computers and internet facilities.
A modern science laboratory was also built at Government Secondary School, Fadan Kamantan, to enhance science education in the district.
In the health sector, Katung secured a partnership with U.S.-based humanitarian organisation, Project CURE, which supplied medical equipment valued at over ₦8 billion to 10 general hospitals across Southern Kaduna. He also launched Project 365, an initiative aimed at combating viral hepatitis in the zone.
The senator further facilitated the rehabilitation of the Fadan Ninzo Rural Hospital and Maternity Centre, supplied medicines to primary healthcare facilities, and commenced the construction of a primary healthcare centre in Ghauta community of Jema’a Local Government Area.
Infrastructure projects facilitated by the lawmaker include the installation of over 5,000 solar-powered streetlights and the drilling of more than 300 boreholes across communities in the district. Solar-powered boreholes with mini treatment plants were also provided to educational institutions and several communities.
On empowerment, over 1,000 constituents benefited from vocational and skills acquisition programmes in poultry production, welding, tiling, electrical installation and footwear manufacturing through partnerships with relevant government agencies.
The senator also facilitated the recruitment of more than 100 constituents into the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies, while others secured appointments in federal institutions and agencies.
Farmers across the district received support through the distribution of over 10,000 bags of fertiliser and training programmes on modern agricultural practices, including ginger processing.
In education, more than 9,000 tertiary students, including 174 persons living with disabilities, received scholarships, while over 11,000 students had their SSCE and JAMB registration fees paid across 174 public schools.
Katung also provided relief materials and welfare support to victims of insecurity and internally displaced persons, while facilitating the inclusion of over 3,000 constituents in the Federal Government’s Presidential Conditional Grant Scheme.
Speaking on his three years in office, the senator said his focus remains on delivering practical benefits to the people through effective representation and development-oriented interventions.
Observers say the senator’s record over the last three years reflects a blend of legislative advocacy, constituency projects and empowerment programmes aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of communities across Southern Kaduna.
