A former Senior Legislative Aide to the Deputy Senate President, Rijo Shekari, has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the need to align with a platform that reflects his political ideals and commitment to the independence and dignity of the Southern Kaduna people.

Shekari, who previously served on the Presidential Committee of the Nigeria Youth Investment Fund, made his defection known during the Kaduna South Senatorial District expanded caucus meeting of the PDP on Tuesday, held in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, where he was formally received into the party.

Speaking shortly after his declaration, Shekari said his decision followed wide consultations with his supporters and political associates.

He explained that the PDP offers a more viable platform for him to contribute meaningfully to national development and the strengthening of democracy.

He expressed appreciation for the opportunities he had while in the APC, but noted that prevailing political realities influenced his decision to move on.

PDP leaders at the meeting described his defection as a significant boost to the party’s strength ahead of the 2027 general elections.

They said his experience in both the Presidency and the National Assembly would add value to the party’s strategic engagement and grassroots mobilisation.

The party assured Shekari of equal opportunities and full integration into its structures, while calling on other political actors to join efforts aimed at deepening democracy and promoting good governance.
